Chapter 18

Lyle cornered Nancy in their bedroom right after dinner. “Okay, I got us a plan,” he whispered, even though the bedroom door was closed and the boys were down in the basement watching a movie on the old TV set.

“Does it involve groceries? I tell you, I had no idea how much three boys can eat.” She carried a stack of folded laundry to the dresser and pulled a drawer open.

Lyle had walked into the connecting bathroom. “We got some of that PM headache medicine, the one I hate to take but you bought it anyway?” He’d pulled open a lower cabinet door and was pawing through the cleaning supplies she kept there.

“Hold on, hold on. I’ll get it. You’ll have everything in the place all messed up.” She set the laundry basket inside the closet and walked into the bathroom.

Behind the mirrored medicine cabinet door, she located the bottle he was talking about and handed it over to him.

“You having a hard time sleeping, honey?” Concern was written all over her face. Lyle always had a hard time sleeping. It wasn’t in his nature to be less than vigilant about what was going on around him.

“Not me. I’m fine. We’re gonna share this with our guests,” he said with a sly grin.

“They’ll all take some pills just because you recommend them?”

“They don’t need to know why they’re getting such a good night’s sleep.”

“What! No. No, no, no. You cannot drug those boys. I won’t have it.” She reached for the bottle but he was quicker, stepping backward into the bedroom and holding it behind his back.

“You want your groceries, or don’t you?” With his other hand, he pulled the slip of paper from his jeans’ pocket. “We’ll get them sound asleep and I’ll be able to drive out without them hearing a thing. That all-night supermarket won’t be crowded at midnight tonight and I can do it in no time.”

“Oh, Lyle … why can’t this just be over? Just let the kids go.”

He stepped in closer and his face contorted with fury. “I told you why!” His voice hissed through clenched teeth. “At least one of ’em’s a spy from Braxton. I haven’t figured out yet how this’ll go, but we can’t take the chance that they’ll bring the Feds in here. It don’t take much to start another Ruby Ridge or Waco.”

Her resolve crumpled. There was no point in arguing with him when he got this way.

“You’re gonna make up some of that hot chocolate they like so much. Crush up three of these pills for each cup.”

“The dose is two—”

“I said three. They’re big boys. Take their cocoa down there and watch ’em drink up.” He saw the hesitation on her face. “Fine—I’ll help you. Let’s get in the kitchen now.”

Thirty minutes later, all three boys were dozing in their seats as the DVD movie came to an end. Nancy gently ushered them to their bedroom and wished them goodnight. Lyle locked the door from the outside and gave her a satisfied smile.
